Legionnaire Insurance Trust (LIT)

The Legionnaire Insurance Trust (LIT) was formed in 1966, with two primary goals:  to provide Legion families with low cost insurance protection and to provide a source of revenue to participating Departments.  For every policy you purchase, a portion of your premium is allocated to The American Legion, Department of Nebraska!
The Trust has been so successful in its more than 40 years that today some 2 million Legionnaires in 48 participating Departments are enrolled in this unique program.  Also, during this time, over $400 million in claims benefits have been paid to Legionnaires and their families and over $40 million in allocations have been paid to participating Legion Departments.
Since its creation, AGIA has developed each of the insurance programs by working closely with the Trust to negotiate the most comprehensive coverage at the lowest possible cost; to assist in presenting the programs for Trust approval; to work with the insurance companies to develop the best quality enrollment materials; and to ensure access to superior customer service.  AGIA is proud to serve over 2 million Legion families from coast to coast.
The first Trust insurance plan to be offered was the Hospital Income Protection Plan, a program designed to pay fixed dollar amounts for periods of hospital confinement.  Over the years, other insurance coverage offered has included Disability Income, Cancer Care Expense, Travel Accident, Long Term Care, Medicare Supplement, Surgical Benefits, Medical, Dental, Accidental Death, Auto and Homeowners Insurance.  Click here to visit TheLIT.com
ATTENTION POSTS:  New Law Threatens Tax Exempt Status
Beginning in 2008, small tax-exempt organizations that previously were not required to file returns may be required to file an annual electronic notice, Form 99-N, Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations not required to file Form 990 or 990-EZ.  This filing requirement applies to tax periods beginning after December 31, 2006.  Organizations that do not file the notice will lose their tax-exempt status.  With the enactment of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA), small tax-exempt organizations (gross receipts of $25,999 or less) will now be required to file electronically Form 990-N, also known as the e-Postcard, with the IRS annually.  The PPA requires the IRS to revoke the tax-exempt status of any organization that fails to meet its annual filing requirement for three consecutive years.  For additional information, subscribe to Exempt Organization's EO Update, a regular email newsletter that highlights new information posted on the Charities pages of irs.gov.
