SCOUTING PROGRAM

EAGLE SCOUT OF THE YEAR

SCOUTING SQUARE KNOT AWARD

The American Legion annually honors The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year at its National Convention. The winner of the competition receives an $10,000 scholarship and the three runners-up are each awarded $2,500 scholarships.

The Department of Nebraska chooses an Eagle Scout of the Year in March, who will then represent the Department in national American Legion competition in May.  The Nebraska Eagle Scout of the Year is given a $500 cash award, while second place receives a $300 cash award and third place receives a $200 cash award.

Eagle Scouts selected as Nebraska Eagle Scouts of the Year can enter competition each year as long as they meet all eligibility requirements.  However, when a Department Eagle Scout of the Year is selected as National American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year or Runner-up, then they can no longer enter state competition.

This award is designed to recognize American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of The American Legion members who are actively involved in the Scouting program. Its purpose is to recognize dedication and work by the member to assist in furthering the Scouting program in
The American Legion.

This award is not meant to be a selective or limited award, but one that is available to any American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of The American Legion member who completes the requirements for this award.

It is expected that American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of The American Legion members will work to provide the maximum impact of the American Legion's support of the Scouting program and to achieve maximum visibility.
