Purpose Since 1925, The American Legion has sponsored a nationwide youth baseball program. During these past eight decades, over 10 million players have enjoyed playing the game of baseball. The American Legion and the 2.7 million members have raised millions of dollars each year to give young baseball players an opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork, team loyalty, discipline, leadership and good sportsmanship. The purpose of American Legion Baseball has always been to help develop America's youth that will someday step forward and become the nation's future leaders. More than half of today's Major League Baseball players are American Legion Baseball alumni. Nebraska American Legion Baseball conducts one of the strongest programs in the country and is one of the top programs in the nation in players per capita. Playing Legion Baseball: The program is always growing, and participation is easy. About 5,000 teams compete each year, so there’s ample opportunity for new players to join, and for coaches who want to start a team. The league also employs a large number of umpires and other volunteers. If you are interested in playing, simply contact your local Legion post. Click on The American Legion Post Locator and fill in your city, state and ZIP code. Players can only sign up for the post that is the shortest driving distance from their residence. Players who are cut from a team, or try out but don't make the roster, can play for the post that is the next-shortest driving distance from their residence. If a player doesn't make that team, he can try out with the next-closest post. He can continue until he finds a team to join.
